Waynes Woods

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 9 months ago

Named after General Anthony "Mad Anthony" Wayne, who became colonel of the Fourth Regiment Pennsylvania troops, known (or rather, not known) for its unsuccessful attempt to invade Canada back in 1775. Wayne got his nickname reportedly because he could lead troops into battle on two hours of sleep. It's unclear if it was Wayne or the troops who lacked sleep, but at any rate, that would drive anyone mad. He had what was called a fiery personality that enhanced his nickname's significance.

These are the woods within the park that bear Wayne's name. He's not buried here. He's buried in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Radnor, PA. Wayne actually died of gout in 1796 en route from Detroit to Pennsylvania. He was originally buried at Fort Presque Isle (now Erie). His body was eventually brought back to Radnor where it now rests in the family plot. However, legend has it that a few of his bones were lost along the way along what is now Rte. 322, causing the general's ghost to now wander the roads every January 1st (his birthday) in search of his missing parts. This writer can neither confirm nor deny the reports. If you want to, be my guest.
